(Poésie)

His years in France had a major influence on his intellectual development. He became acquainted with European literature and culture while remaining deeply attached to Arabic language, Islamic heritage, and classical Arabic poetry.

After returning to Egypt, he became closely associated with the Khedival court, which had a strong influence on the themes of his early poetry.

2. His Relationship with the Palace and His Exile

During the early part of his career, Shawqi was closely connected with Khedive Abbas II and worked within the royal court.

His poetry during this period included a considerable amount of political and royal praise.

However, during the First World War, his life changed dramatically. In 1915, he was exiled to Spain.

His years in Spain were extremely important to his literary development. Away from Egypt, he experienced a deep sense of homesickness and began expressing stronger feelings of patriotism and attachment to his homeland.
